The
Mystery of the Death of Kurt Cobain
By Donna Rozzell
Introduction
The lead singer and songwriter for the famous band Nirvana was found three days after dying. Kurt Cobain was found by an electrician in his greenhouse with a shotgun lying on his chest and signs of blood all around him (Scoot 1). Some say that he committed suicide to get away from his chronic stomach pains, but fans believe that his wife, Courtney Love, murdered him. Kurt was planning to divorce Courtney (1). Due to their prenuptial agreement, Courtney would not be receiving any money from the divorce, but she was still in his will at the time so if he were to die then she would receive money (1). We are going to dive into all of the evidence that is out there that he was murdered.
Character analysis
Kurt Cobain was a depressed individual. Depression is widespread, but it is also a severe illness. It affects the way people feel, act, and think. Depression can make you feel sad all of the time, make you lose interest in activists, and can lead to physical and emotional damage. Kurt Cobain’s depression took off during his parent's divorce. “Cobain’s life took a dramatic turn when his parents divorced in 1975 when he was about eight. His mother recalled how he took the divorce seriously and became increasingly withdrawn and defiant” (Fong, 1). Kurt was so ashamed of his parents’ divorce that he was too scared to face his friends at his school because he wanted to have a normal happy family (1). Kurt and his sister ended up staying with their mother, but when Kurt’s mom moved in her boyfriend Kurt decided to go live with his dad (Blencha, 1). Kurt was happy living with his father until his dad remarried and moved his wife and her children into the house (1). Kurt was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and knew it would become difficult to manage (Fong, 1). Kurt’s home life and school life became stressful and toxic for him during his teenage years (1). “Unfortunately, both his parents were often infuriated with Cobain’s rebellious behavior, so he often found himself shuffled between friends and extended family members” (1).
Kurt was not interested in being social with anyone and wasn’t interested in participating in school activities (1). He became a social outcast. Kurt ended up getting in trouble with the law and part of that was rebelling against prejudices. In high school, Kurt was an easy target for bullies because he was an outcast and because he was friends with a gay student (1). “It has been noted that in interviews Cobain claimed that he used to spray paint “God is Gay” on pickup trucks around Aberdeen, and was once arrested for spraying another derogatory message. Regardless of the struggles that he endured during his childhood, Cobain maintained strong morals against prejudice” (1). Kurt ended up dropping out of high school 2 weeks before his graduation because he realized that he did not have enough credits to graduate in the first place and he did not like the idea of staying any longer in high school (1). His mom did not want to deal with him anymore so she told him that he needed to get a job or get out of her house but soon after he found all his belongings in the basement and got kicked out by his mother (1). He would jump from being at a couple of his friends' houses and sometimes would sneak into his mom’s basement (1). Kurt was obviously in a bad living situation that did not help with his mentality at all. After working odd jobs, Kurt made enough to rent out an apartment with his buddies (1). Eventually, Kurt saved enough money to find his place and live by himself. Kurt often felt like he was isolated from the world and also felt misunderstood. Kurt wound up using music as an escape from reality.
Most songwriters use writing music to express their feelings and emotions to others. Kurt Cobain’s music was a way of expressing his feelings and emotions in his way. His love for music made it easy for him to form his feelings methodically. Kurt Cobain was a very talented instrumental person vocally and instrumentally. Kurt Cobain became a famous singer and songwriter and his love for music started when he was a kid. As a teenager, Kurt would run off to punk shows and rock shows (Fong, 1). When Kurt was in elementary and Junior High, he played the drums. For Kurt’s 14th birthday, he received a guitar from his uncle, who was obsessed with it (Blecha, 1). At one of the shows that Kurt attended, Kurt told the band's guitarist that he knew how to play their song “Louie Louie”, their signature rock’n’roll song. Kurt misplayed it for the guitarist so the guitarist showed him how to play a three-cord tune (1). Eventually, the guitarist gave Kurt guitar lessons and helped him get a guitar with better quality (1). Kurt’s obsession with his guitar became so bad that he stopped doing his homework and soon after his dad ended his guitar lessons (1). Kurt became friends with a circle of people of teens in his area who knew the top post-punk bands in the area. In 1985, Kurt Cobain formed his first band called Fecal Matter (Bailey, 1). The band started out playing in local bars and then later disappeared due to several people leaving the band and other issues they had while they were in the rock world (1). Kurt and the few members that had stayed from the other band founded Nirvana in 1987 (1). Kurt enjoyed grunge music and formed the band Nirvana around that type of music (Scoot, 1). It was argued that Nirvana made grunge music popular in America (1). Kurt also had other things on his mind than just music.
Kurt Cobain’s love for his wife was different than most people’s at that time. Kurt first saw his wife Courtney Love in 1989 at a concert (Fong, 1). They formally met in January 1990 at a nightclub (Clark, 1). Courtney had already decided that she liked Kurt when she had first seen him performing at his concert (1). At first, Cobain dismissed Courtney and her advances towards him. Kurt once said, “I was determined to be a bachelor for a few months, but I knew I liked Courtney so much right away that it was a hard struggle to stay away from her for so many months. (1)” Courtney and Kurt got married pretty fast after they got together and it turned out that Courtney happened to be pregnant with their first child during their wedding. Kurt loved his baby so much that he made a picture of one of the sonograms a part of Nirvana’s Lithium artwork, but his love for his baby didn’t change Kurt and Courtney’s relationship (1). Kurt and Courtney’s love for each other was not always the healthiest. “Kurt Cobain picked Courtney Love, and Courtney Love picked Kurt Cobain,” said Cross. “No matter how flawed they were at times as individuals, they were two people who loved each other. Before Kurt’s death, he was looking into getting a divorce with Courtney.
Character Analysis
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s relationship was not healthy. They were depressed together and one of the things keeping them together was their baby that they had together. Kurt was planning on divorcing Courtney towards the end of his life (Scoot, 1). Courtney and Kurt had a prenuptial agreement so Courtney knew that she could not get any money from him (1). Kurt had Courtney in his will at the time, so she knew that if they were to get divorced, she would also be taken out of his will (Catie, 1). Courtney knew that Kurt struggled a lot with depression and substance abuse and had a history of trying to commit suicide. When Kurt found out that Courtney had thought about cheating on him he tried to commit suicide and ended up in a coma (“Rock Music”, 1). Kurt was found dead in his greenhouse days after he died (Scoot, 1). They found him with a gunshot wound to the head with a shotgun (1). “Kurt had heroin and a trace of Valium in his system at the time of his death. The official ruling was: suicide. But many people, who were either close to Kurt or familiar with his life right before his death, refused to believe that it was suicide and built a murder case. (Scoot, 1)” The detectives that were working the case never checked the gun for fingerprints, with that said there was no technical proof that he shot himself (Mendoza, 1). Kurt used a Remington Model 11, which is around 50 inches, and Kurt Cobain was 68.9 inches, indicating that he would have had to use his feet to pull the trigger on the gun (1). Through the investigation, there was a handwriting practice sheet of Courtney’s that was found (“KurtCobainWasKilled”, 1). As the theory of Courtney Love killing Kurt Cobian started circulating the internet, more people started to realize that it was an actual possibility.
Kurt Cobain’s death was pronounced as suicide. Kurt grew up with depression and had a history of attempting suicide. Kurt Cobain’s parents’ divorce is what triggered his depression episodes and insecurities (Fong,1). “He showed markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all, activities of the day, nearly every day. (1). Kurt felt overwhelmed being the lead singer in his band (1). All of the stress from his job started getting to his head and started making him feel crazy (1). Kurt was also experiencing weight loss from not eating and feeling nauseous often (1). He struggled a lot with insomnia which gave him nightmares of feeling worthless and he had endless feelings of inappropriate guilt (1). “Throughout most of his life, Cobain suffered from chronic bronchitis, a nagging stomach ulcer an irritable colon, and depression. (1).” The stomach issues took a toll on his mental health and made him emotionally unstable (1). Kurt would use the chronic stomach pains as an excuse to do heroin (Scoot, 1). He would say that heroin was the only thing that would mask the pain in his stomach (1). A month before his death he was rushed to the hospital because he swallowed 50 painkillers trying to overdose (1).
